Low-temperature infrared dielectric function of hyperbolic -quartz
We report the infrared dielectric properties of -quartz in the
temperature range from to . Using an
infrared free-electron laser, far-infrared reflectivity spectra of a single
crystal -cut were acquired along both principal axes, under two different
incidence angles, in S- and P-polarization. These experimental data have been
fitted globally for each temperature with a multioscillator model, allowing to
extract frequencies and damping rates of the ordinary and extraordinary,
transverse and longitudinal optic phonon modes, and hence the
temperature-dependent dispersion of the infrared dielectric function. The
results are in line with previous high-temperature studies, allowing for a
parametrized description of all temperature-dependent phonon parameters and the
resulting dielectric function from up to the
--phase transition temperature, . Using
these data, we predict remarkably high quality factors for polaritons in
-quartz's hyperbolic spectral region at low temperatures
Magnetic field effects in few-level quantum dots: theory, and application to experiment
We examine several effects of an applied magnetic field on Anderson-type
models for both single- and two-level quantum dots, and make direct comparison
between numerical renormalization group (NRG) calculations and recent
conductance measurements. On the theoretical side the focus is on
magnetization, single-particle dynamics and zero-bias conductance, with
emphasis on the universality arising in strongly correlated regimes; including
a method to obtain the scaling behavior of field-induced Kondo resonance shifts
over a very wide field range. NRG is also used to interpret recent experiments
on spin-1/2 and spin-1 quantum dots in a magnetic field, which we argue do not
wholly probe universal regimes of behavior; and the calculations are shown to
yield good qualitative agreement with essentially all features seen in
experiment. The results capture in particular the observed field-dependence of
the Kondo conductance peak in a spin-1/2 dot, with quantitative deviations from
experiment occurring at fields in excess of 5 T, indicating the eventual
inadequacy of using the equilibrium single-particle spectrum to calculate the

An inequality of Kostka numbers and Galois groups of Schubert problems
We show that the Galois group of any Schubert problem involving lines in
projective space contains the alternating group. Using a criterion of Vakil and
a special position argument due to Schubert, this follows from a particular
inequality among Kostka numbers of two-rowed tableaux. In most cases, an easy
combinatorial injection proves the inequality. For the remaining cases, we use
that these Kostka numbers appear in tensor product decompositions of
sl_2(C)-modules. Interpreting the tensor product as the action of certain
commuting Toeplitz matrices and using a spectral analysis and Fourier series
rewrites the inequality as the positivity of an integral. We establish the

Correlated electron physics in multilevel quantum dots: phase transitions, transport, and experiment
We study correlated two-level quantum dots, coupled in effective 1-channel
fashion to metallic leads; with electron interactions including on-level and
inter-level Coulomb repulsions, as well as the inter-orbital Hund's rule
exchange favoring the spin-1 state in the relevant sector of the free dot. For
arbitrary dot occupancy, the underlying phases, quantum phase transitions
(QPTs), thermodynamics, single-particle dynamics and electronic transport
properties are considered; and direct comparison is made to conductance
experiments on lateral quantum dots. Two distinct phases arise generically, one
characterised by a normal Fermi liquid fixed point (FP), the other by an
underscreened (USC) spin-1 FP. Associated QPTs, which occur in general in a
mixed valent regime of non-integral dot charge, are found to consist of
continuous lines of Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions, separated by first order
level-crossing transitions at high symmetry points. A `Friedel-Luttinger sum
rule' is derived and, together with a deduced generalization of Luttinger's
theorem to the USC phase (a singular Fermi liquid), is used to obtain a general
result for the T=0 zero-bias conductance, expressed solely in terms of the dot
occupancy and applicable to both phases. Relatedly, dynamical signatures of the
QPT show two broad classes of behavior, corresponding to the collapse of either
a Kondo resonance, or antiresonance, as the transition is approached from the
Fermi liquid phase; the latter behavior being apparent in experimental
differential conductance maps. The problem is studied using the numerical

The role of stereotactic radiosurgery in the multimodal management of growth hormone–secreting pituitary adenomas
Growth hormone (GH)–secreting pituitary adenomas represent a common source of GH excess in patients with acromegaly. Whereas surgical extirpation of the culprit lesion is considered first-line treatment, as many as 19% of patients develop recurrent symptoms due to regrowth of previously resected adenomatous tissue or to continued growth of the surgically inaccessible tumor. Although medical therapies that suppress GH production can be effective in the management of primary and recurrent acromegaly, these therapies are not curative, and lifelong treatment is required for hormonal control. Stereotactic radiosurgery has emerged as an effective adjunctive treatment modality, and is an appealing alternative to conventional fractionated radiation therapy. The authors reviewed the growing body of literature concerning the role of radiosurgical procedures in the treatment armamentarium of acromegaly, and identified more than 1350 patients across 45 case series. In this review, the authors report that radiosurgery offers true hormonal normalization in 17% to 82% of patients and tumor growth control in 37% to 100% of cases across all series, while minimizing adverse complications. As a result, stereotactic radiosurgery represents a safe and effective treatment option in the multimodal management of primary or recurrent acromegaly secondary to GH-secreting pituitary adenomas
Genome-wide association study of electrocardiographic and heart rate variability traits: the Framingham Heart Study
BACKGROUND: Heritable electrocardiographic (ECG) and heart rate variability (HRV) measures, reflecting pacemaking, conduction, repolarization and autonomic function in the heart have been associated with risks for cardiac arrhythmias. Whereas several rare monogenic conditions with extreme phenotypes have been noted, few common genetic factors contributing to interindividual variability in ECG and HRV measures have been identified. We report the results of a community-based genomewide association study of six ECG and HRV intermediate traits. METHODS: Genotyping using Affymetrix 100K GeneChip was conducted on 1345 related Framingham Heart Study Original and Offspring cohort participants. We analyzed 1175 Original and Offspring participants with ECG data (mean age 52 years, 52% women) and 548 Offspring participants with HRV data (mean age 48 years, 51% women), in relation to 70,987 SNPs with minor allele frequency ≥ 0.10, call rate ≥ 80%, Hardy-Weinberg p-value ≥ 0.001. We used generalized estimating equations to test association of SNP alleles with multivariable-adjusted residuals for QT, RR, and PR intervals, the ratio of low frequency to high frequency power (LF/HFP), total power (TP) and the standard deviation of normal RR intervals (SDNN). RESULTS: Associations at p < 10-3 were found for 117 (QT), 105 (RR), 111 (PR), 102 (LF/HF), 121 (TP), and 102 (SDNN) SNPs. Several common variants in NOS1AP (4 SNPs with p-values < 10-3; lowest p-value, rs6683968, p = 1 × 10-4) were associated with adjusted QT residuals, consistent with our previously reported finding for NOS1AP in an unrelated sample of FHS Offspring and other cohorts. All results are publicly available at NCBI's dbGaP at. CONCLUSION: In the community-based Framingham Heart Study none of the ECG and HRV results individually attained genomewide significance. However, the presence of bona fide QT-associated SNPs among the top 117 results for QT duration supports the importance of efforts to validate top results from the reported scans.
